211⏤ The 911 of social services.

Indiana 211 (IN211) is a free and confidential referral service that helps Hoosiers find the local resources they need such as utility assistance, shelter, and food. Indiana residents can find resources via call, text, or online.

In October 2018, I joined IN211's team as the SNAP Outreach Coordinator. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is the largest federally funded food assistance program in the United States, formally known as food stamps. So, what does a SNAP Outreach Coordinator do? Travel to all 92 counties in Indiana to create awareness for and educate individuals and organizations about SNAP and IN211's SNAP prescreening, all in one year. At first, the role seemed daunting and borderline impossible. But, crossing off counties on the Indiana county map soon became something that energized me. With time, I learned that no two Indiana counties are the same and that in order for any audience to listen to my message, I needed to try to understand them first.

In my first year serving as the SNAP Outreach Coordinator, I redesigned SNAP marketing materials, brought the word about SNAP to IN211's social media, attended and spoke at a slew of community meetings and events, oversaw internal changes, created partnerships, and created awareness for SNAP in all 92 Indiana counties. In April and May of 2019, I completely rewrote and revamped IN211's SNAP outreach plan including new ideas, goals, reporting, and more. In October 2019, IN211 began their eighth year under the SNAP Outreach grant that I wrote.

The nonprofit world is all about wearing multiple hats at once. So, although my key role at IN211 is SNAP outreach, I also have my hand in IN211 outreach, social media, communications, and community engagement. Depending on the day and need, these tasks can look very different. I have written press releases, secured a placement in the local news, spoken at conferences, designed reports and graphics, the list goes on. My favorite part about my unspoken roles at IN211 is that no two days or projects are the same.
